According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/349484\/state-of-the-global-workplace.aspx\">Gallup\u00b4s State of the Global Workplace 2023 report<\/a> \u2013 conducted across more than 160 countries &#8211; <strong>44% of employees <\/strong>report experiencing high work-related stress, <strong> <\/strong>a figure that reinforces an upward trend that began a decade ago.<\/p>\n\n<p>Stress itself is not a disease. It is a normal biological process that activates certain systems and mechanisms in the body to react to a stimulus perceived as threatening. The problem arises <strong>when it becomes chronic.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n<p>This condition can cause numerous issues at both the individual and organizational levels. On a personal level, it increases the risk of <strong>physical and mental health problems, <\/strong>as warned by the World Health Organization (WHO). In addition, it can foster a negative work environment and increase the likelihood of mistakes.  <\/p>\n\n<p>One area that has received growing attention in recent years is how stress affects decision-making.<strong> <\/strong>From the moment we wake up until we go to bed, we spend our days choosing between numerous options, something that <strong>has consequences<\/strong>\u2014some more significant than others\u2014in the short and long term.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer bw-custom-spacer-small\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading bw-custom-title-section has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Risk and Impulsivity<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>According to some studies, stress at work can affect the decision-making process in different ways, making us, for example, more likely <strong>to underestimate risks<\/strong> (4) <strong>or impulsive<\/strong> (6).<\/p>\n\n<p>What is not very clear is why this happens. Research published in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/linkinghub.elsevier.com\/retrieve\/pii\/S0896627315006273\"><em>Neuron <\/em><\/a><\/strong>&#8211; a leading <em>neuroscience journal<\/em> &#8211; concluded that excessive stress could be <strong>\u201ccapable of altering brain circuits,<\/strong> favoring the search for quick and pleasurable rewards\u201d. However, the researchers noted the results were preliminary and called for further studies. <\/p>\n\n<p>Gideon Nave, professor of marketing at Wharton (University of Pennsylvania), is one of the leading researchers in this field. In a study published in 2016 in the journal P<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0306453015300202\"><em>sychoneuroendocrinology,<\/em><\/a> <em> <\/em>he suggested that <strong>excessive levels <\/strong><strong>of cortisol, <\/strong>a hormone related to stress, impair decision-making and cognitive performance.<\/p>\n\n<p>In an interview with the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/es.weforum.org\/agenda\/2016\/12\/como-influye-el-estres-en-la-toma-de-decisiones\/\">World Economic Forum, <\/a><\/strong>Nave illustrated this point with a simple exercise: \u201cImagine that I have a baseball bat and a ball here. Together, they cost $1.10. Now, the bat costs $1 more than the ball. What is the price of the ball?\u201d <\/p>\n\n<p>The interviewer quickly answers \u201cten cents.\u201d And, of course, he&#8217;s wrong. If the ball costs ten cents and the bat costs a dollar more, that means the bat costs $1.10, so the total for both would be $1.20.  <strong> <\/strong>The correct answer is <strong>5 cents and $1.05. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Nave continues: \u201cWhat we found is that when you give people cortisol, they are more likely to do what you just did: they say ten cents and don&#8217;t really analyze it, even though they are paid to get it right. <strong>They give the quickest intuitive answer, <\/strong>as if they were under some kind of pressure.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer bw-custom-spacer-small\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading bw-custom-title-section has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Stuck in Routine<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>This example can be applied to everyday working life, demonstrating that stress is a serious enemy to good employee performance. Years earlier, in 2012, another study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/tp201259\"><em><strong>Translational Psychiatry<\/strong><\/em><\/a> showed that workers under stress were unable to break out of their established routines. In other words, their ability to adapt was inhibited, <strong>which is a serious problem in a changing environment.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n<p>While further research is needed, one thing is clear: <strong>organizational culture must change.<\/strong> Stress represents a significant challenge in decision-making. These adverse effects not only harm workers&#8217; quality of life, but also have serious repercussions for organizations, impacting <strong>productivity<\/strong>, increasing <strong>errors<\/strong>, and creating a tense work environment. <\/p>\n\n<p>To mitigate the damage, organizations can implement measures such as <strong>stress management training,<\/strong> equitable workload distribution, flexible work hours<strong>,<\/strong> open communication, and above all, <strong>more empathetic leadership. <\/strong>To carry out all these tasks, incorporating behavioral science\u2014psychology, anthropology, sociology\u2014into the culture of organizations is key to achieving this.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer bw-custom-spacer-small\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group bw-post-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity bw-custom-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group bw-custom-references-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer bw-custom-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading bw-custom-references-title\">[References]<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>[1] Gallup.
